The Two-Year-Old Was Here
Sometimes the forces of nature conspire to crush even your best plans for getting a little work done. As I’m learning, one of the most powerful of these forces is a two-year-old child.
We had some great weather for early October in Minnesota this weekend. Bright sunny skies, dry crisp air, and comfortably cool temperatures through the day– what a time to work in the yard!
Friday afternoon, while my son played with the dog in the backyard, I took in the vegetable garden. I raked up the straw, pulled up the plants and turned over the soil to prep it to receive some fresh compost. Crash! The toddler toppled the birdbath smashing the base irreparably.

On Saturday, I planned to continue with the garden and prune some shrubs when my son took his nap. But naptime never came. My little bundle of energy just wanted to play all day. We had a great time playing in the yard until he accidentally went wading in the little pond. He was soaked from the waist down, so we got cleaned up and found activities to do inside.
Fortunately it was back to our normal routine today, so after a fun, full morning of activity with my son, I successfully put him down for a nap. While he slept, I got the shrubs trimmed, decorated the windowbox for fall and transplanted some sumac and a raspberry bush. With a little progress made on my house chores, I’m ready for a nap myself.
