I Heart Statistics

The other day I noticed that some other housebloggers had hit counters on their blogs. “I should get one of those for my blog,” I thought. So I googled around a bit and found a great free service called StatCounter.

Not only does StatCounter provide a counter for visitors and page views, but it also collects tons of fascinating data about visit length, visitor location, entry and exit pages, keyword analysis, browser and system stats and more. For free. With no ads on your blog.

StatCounter Graph

So now I check my little bar graphs for hits like a daytrader watches the NYSE ticker. I’m also enjoying indulging my curiosity for all the exotic places from which I’ve received visits: Alaska! New Zealand! Arkansas!

StatCounter has also told me that I get most of my visits through HouseBlogs.net. Thanks to everyone there for making such a great virtual neighborhood. If any other housebloggers (or other visitors) are looking for a free, full-featured web traffic analysis tool, give StatCounter a look.

Disclosure: I have no affiliation with StatCounter in any way. I’m simply a satisfied user of their service.

I just got StatCounter for my new non-house blog, http://commuterrock.blogspot.com. I love it so far, too, though there are so few hits yet that I haven’t learned much! :)

I like to check the houseblogs listing of most viewed. It was rather exciting when I hit the top ten. Of course some blogs have been going for a longer time so they have an insane number of views.

You wouldn’t believe how many people search the words “Crack House”! The funniest hit so far was someone who typed “Bain of our existence” as keywords….. funny since I always say that Plumbing is the bain of my existence! Other than that I can tell when my mother is reading my blog!

Hmm, just reviewed the Most Viewed list, and some of the numbers don’t make sense. It says my site, for example, only has like 350 hits EVER when it’s more like 1,000 a month. Also, Petch House is way low, and I know that gets a lot of houseblogs visitors.

Gary, your “crack house” searches make me wish I had named the blog something more interesting– hilarious!

As Ben mentioned above, I also regularly check the houseblogs “most viewed” rankings to see how I’m doing. My blog was the 117th site to join, and was ranked 34th in visits, last I checked.

Off to check “most viewed”,
Josh

Kristin,

I join your surprise that your site isn’t ranked more highly on HouseBlogs. Perhaps you don’t have the HitTracker code in the right spot in your site’s HTML. Here at Bungalow ‘23, I’ve got the Hit Tracker installed on the main page, very near the top of the code.

Good luck!
