Organizing the Workshop

Is it possible to live too close to IKEA? While picking up shelves for the new toyroom I couldn’t resist getting some shelving for my woefully disorganized workshop also. It’s an impulse buy, but I guess there are worse impulses. At least IKEA impulses are cheap and stylish…

I’m still working on filling the shelves, but rest assured, there’s no shortage of stuff to go there. I just need to schedule some quality time with my labelmaker to get everything organized. As you can see, there’s plenty of work left to do:

There are a group of old gray cabinets and drawers in the workshop visible on the left of the photo above. The cabinets are pretty inflexible storage and the drawers have seen better days. As a result, I have not used them very well so far and they are mostly empty now. I’m considering replacing these with adjustable open shelving, but I have not made that commitment yet. These drawers and cabinets have obviously been there for quite a while. Even though this isn’t exactly a valuable old house feature the way original windows and mouldings are, it is still a little hard to think of getting rid of them. I’m probably being too sentimental.
