Nothing much got accomplished around the house in the past few days. Our extended family needed some help over the weekend and I took a bike ride with my 4-year-old son on Sunday, before yesterday’s snow storm. I had hoped I would get a few hours to work on the nursery project but that just didn’t happen.
My bike ride took me past the half-frozen Minnehaha Falls gorge before continuing out to Historic Fort Snelling.
Although the actual stone-walled garrison at Fort Snelling has been restored and operates as a park and historic site, many of the buildings from the fort’s Upper Post are unused and boarded. This part of the fort was included in the 2006 list of “America’s Most Endangered Places” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. I believe that some funding has been secured to help stabilize the site.
In one of the most bizarre building juxtapositions around, these stately but dilapidated buildings stand facing a complex of new athletic fields and a public golf course, with one of the country’s busiest airports at the end of the block. I have added a new set of images from the fort to the photos page if you’d like to see more. I’ll have to go back there sometime with my real camera when the lighting is better– these camera phone pictures aren’t the best.
In case you didn’t notice, the page navigation at the top of the site has a new tab called “stuff.” This is an area where I can recommend products I have used here at the house or share items that are on my wish list for a future purchase. Yes, it is a monetization device for me, but my primary purpose is to list some of my favorite books and tools in one spot as a reference for readers like you.
I also upgraded the blog software to WordPress 2.5 last night. Nearly everything converted without a hitch, though I had to disable a couple incompatible plugins. If you see anything that isn’t working right, please drop me an email or leave a comment.
