Welcome to Bungalow ’23, stop five on the Bungalow Blog Tour! When my wife, Ms. Bungalow, and I bought our house in October of 2004, we weren’t necessarily looking for a bungalow or an Arts &  Crafts home.  We just wanted a place near the south Minneapolis neighborhood where Ms. Bungalow grew up that would [...]

Every year when the weather turns cold I order a load of cord wood to burn in living room fireplace. But I have been slow to fill my firewood rack this year, so I decided to try some of the engineered logs widely available in hardware stores, grocery stores and home improvement centers.  I found [...]

While I was contemplating paint striping chemicals, I overheard a conversation in the neighboring aisle between a clerk and a customer regarding painted fireplaces. They were discussing options for how to make an off-white painted fireplace look [...]

With just a couple finishing details left to complete, I lit the first fire in the paint-free fireplace last Friday, December 8. Since then, I’ve wrapped up all the finishing. The brick is real and it’s spectacular! Here’s how I handled the last stripping and finishing details: Last Thursday night I removed the last of [...]

This Could Be The Day

by Josh on December 9, 2005 · 0 comments

This could be the day I announce victory over the fireplace. Things are very close now. If I hadn’t run out of clean rags last night, I could herald the end of this project with certainty. Yesterday I returned from four days away on business to find the replacement fireplace screen waiting on the front [...]

For me, this is the time when the temptation to cut corners is greatest because the project’s conclusion is so tantalizingly close and deadlines loom so large. So far I am holding firm to my commitment to get all [...]
