Well so far with the HH I haven't had too much trouble with motivation, (at least on the exterior) since the big, cuddly City of Minneapolis is keeping me on the straight and narrow with their never-ending citations and fines!

I <3 my city housing inspector. :-)

I don't remember how I found them at first-- I think it was from googling "mission furniture" or from seeing an ad someplace. I do remember reading an account of one of your trips there, too, though Stucco. If I make it back there sometime on a weekday, it will be nice to know they come recommended.

I visit them maybe once a year and have a few of their pieces. How did you hear about them....not a place someone just stumbles upon, huh?

Good luck with that! We thought about doing it ourselfs, but in the end hired it out as there were parts of walls to rebuild, too.

They are using just quicklime and sand to make the mortar...

Thanks for the tips, Jan. I've heard about wetting the bricks before mortaring but hadn't thought to look at TOH. I didn't find any video there, but I did find a nice <a href="http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/article/0,,232787,00.html"/ rel="nofollow">article on repointing</a> that had some helpful information. Thanks!

Tom Silva on 'Ask this Old House' taped an epidsode on tuckpointing and repair old bricks. Maybe you can find that episode on their website.

I think he did get the bricks wet before he started so it wouldn't wick the moisture out of the mortar too fast.

Yes, my partner and I liked that one a lot too. The finished space was . . . not a museum, but authentic enough to be welcoming and comfortable. Very, very VERY nice-- and we loved the master suite upstairs.
