Every home owner has experienced them– house projects that go wrong. Here just a few forms those DIY problems can take: The Snowball: a DIY project that just keep growing larger or more expensive The Puzzler: a DIY project that leaves you stumped about what to do next The Whopper: a DIY project so large […]

When I hung the schoolhouse light fixtures in my kitchen a few weeks back, readers suggested that I try painting stripes on my inexpensive big box lights like the ones on the expensive schoolhouse globes I loved at the specialty lighting shops.  But with all the curves on the globes, I wan’t at all confident […]

My recent post about the trouble with the downspout and pavement at the front of the house reminded me of another topic I haven’t posted on yet: the front steps. Although I don’t have a picture to prove it, I’m certain my house originally had street-facing front steps with brick wing walls on the sides. […]

I had such high hopes for my summer windowbox this year.  But by early August, I was forced to concede that it was best to just remove the few plants that weren’t already dead and leave the windowbox bare until the time to decorate it for winter. Along with my vegetable garden, the windowbox remains […]

A day after I finished building the trellis next to the back steps, I decided the design still needed a little flair.  I considered a few different ideas for adding some more character to the top of the trellis, but in the end I found my inspiration just glancing up at the roof.

A few weekends ago, I stole away from my own house projects long enough to catch the last hour of the Twin Cities Bungalow Club‘s 2008 Home Tour. I only had time to make it to the first house on the tour, but it was a good one– a nearby bungalow with a contractor for […]
